| Keeping an elevator clean is an important daily chore for many customers; however this activity may harm Lexan components, lacquer spray on brass and paint infill on engraved text, if cleaners are not chosen properly.
Lexan: Cleaners that work well on a stainless steel surface may degrade the Lexan material. GE has determined that most hydrocarbons, phenols, ketones and alkalis will result in failure or severe degradation of Lexan. Cleaners with these ingredients should not be used. GE recommends warm water and mild soap.
Lacquer on brass: our lacquer should last for years if cleaned with a soft, non-abrasive cloth and warm water with mild soap.
Infill paints: These paints are enamel type and hold up to mild cleaners but many stainless steel cleaners have solvents that can degrade the paint.
What is safe to use?
- Any mild soap and water, products that say "will not harm paint" or "will not harm plastic".
- PTL has used lemon pledge with great results.
- GE recommends Johnson Wax Jonclean as a general purpose cleaner that can be used on Lexan. (caution: some paste waxes have solvents!)
- Chemical suppliers should be able to determine if their products are harmful to plastics. Have the cleaning staff inquire with their vendor.
***With all cleaners, the product should never be sprayed directly on pushbuttons, spray a cloth first.
Keep elevator panels clean and serviceable for many years but choosing proper cleaning materials and training the cleaning staff.
PTL Lacquer Finishing For Brass & Bronze Alloys
Many people enjoy the color and richness of brass or bronze fixtures, but may not be aware of the maintenance involved in keeping them looking good. Since these materials are alloys containing copper, without a protective coating they will naturally oxidize and a patina will form on the surface. Also smaller tarnish spots may appear wherever acids from fingertips are deposited.
These problems could be avoided in #8 mirror finished panels by daily cleaning with a brass polish and soft cloth, however, this is not an option for #4 grained panels. With that type of finish acids can get down into the grain and not be removable without some type of abrasive refinishing.
To eliminate these potential problems PTL sprays a 1.5 mil lacquer finish on all our brass or bronze fixture plates. The lacquer protects the material from oxidation and is easily cleaned with warm soapy water and a soft cloth.
Note: If finish problems are detected with a brass or bronze panel outside the normal warranty parameters the services of a company that specializes in refinishing architectural brass in place should be secured.
